Introduction
일상적 작업, 작업적 일상

작가들의 작업 과정은 사회에서 요구되는 일반적인 생산 활동과 거리가 있으며, 특정한 정신적인 상태를 유지하며 그에 관련된 활동을 일상적으로 수행해가는 일에 가깝다. 그리고 그 상태를 자연스럽게 반영하는 행위와 실천이 여러 과정을 걸쳐 어떤 잠정적 귀결점에 도달한다. 이는 인위적 목표를 세우고 그것을 무리하게 관철시키고자 시도하는 일과는 다르다. 지금 여기서 일어나는 상황을 섬세하게 응시하고 관찰하며, 그것을 진지하나 무겁지 않은 태도를 통해 예술적인 제스처로 환원시키는 과정이다.
오랜 기간 동안 쌓인 움직임과 흔적들의 아카이빙은 곧 작업을 이루는 근간이 된다. 결국 작업으로써 어떤 답을 제시하는 것이 아니라, 그것이 만들어진 과정을 이해하고 그 존재감을 감상하는 것이다. 다시 말해 중요한 것은 작업에 도달하는 과정과 그 과정을 이루는 매 순간의 집중 상태이다.
<헬싱키 물산: Summer, Thursday, Library> 3인전은 신현정, 김혜나, 지희 킴 세 작가의 작업 활동 과정과 시공간적 환경의 영향을 주제로 잡은 전시다. 각자의 작업은 그들이 작업과 일상, 또는 그 둘이 얽힌 시공간적 환경에서 작업으로 도달해가는 과정을 구체적으로 재배열하고 음미해보고자 하는 시도다. 매 순간 새로운 아이디어와 작업을 내놓아야 하는 작가들의 압박감은 단조롭기 짝이 없는 일상과 등을 맞대고 있을지도 모른다. 전시 제목 ‘헬싱키 물산’은 이러한 역설을 담은 가상의 이국적 조어로 실제로 세 작가의 그룹 명이기도 하다. 또한 나머지 세 단어(여름, 목요일, 도서관)은 세 작가가 각자의 작업을 제작할 때 중요한 역할을 한 장소 혹은 시기를 가리킨다.
신현정의 ‘Summer Stage’와 ‘오늘의 신간(New Releases)’ 시리즈는 지난해 여름 동안 새 작업실에서 일어난 활동과 서울의 혹독한 여름 날씨에 대처하기 위해 취했던 심리적 혹은 물리적 상태를 반영한 회화-설치 작업이다. 김혜나는 2013년부터 매주 거르지 않은 판화 작업을 선보인다. 작업실 밖 산책길에서 마주하는 사물, 주변에서 보고 들은 이야기들을 인물, 풍경 또는 추상적 이미지들로 나타낸다. 지희 킴은 골드스미스 대학 도서관에서 폐기 처분될 운명의 책을 기증받아 아카이빙 능력을 상실한 책들에 다른 의미를 부여하는 북 드로잉과 팝업 북 작업을 보여준다. 이들은 작업을 설명하는 개념이나 주제보다, 작업이 실질적으로 만들어진 환경과 그에 관련된 물리적인 움직임에 중점을 두는 작가들의 태도를 드러낸다.

Introduction

Routine-like art, work-like routine

The work process of artists are at a distance with the normal production activities societies demand, and it is closer to maintaining a certain mental state and performing relevant activities normally. The reflection of such activities and practices undergo various processes and reach a potential conclusion. This is different from setting an artificial objective and making attempts to accomplish it. The process is about making observation and paying much attention to details about what is happening, and then transforming it into artistic gestures in a serious yet lighthearted manner.
The archives of actions and traces piled up over a long period of time serves as the basis for an artwork. It is not about proposing an answer through an artwork, but is understanding the process of its making and appreciating its existence. In other words, what's important is the process of reaching the artwork and the degree of concentration at each stages of its completion.
Helsinki production Trio Exhibition has the theme of the effect time and space have and the process of the artists' artwork. Each individual artwork is an attempt at specifically rearranging and appreciating the process of the combination of work-life and every-day life being created as an artwork. The pressure on artists to create new artwork and ideas all the time may be on the direct opposite side of the banal and routine reality that we live in. The title 'Helsinki production' is an imaginary and exotic word which has some paradoxical sensation attached to it, and it is the actual group name of the three artists. The words 'Summer', 'Thursday', and 'Library' represent the time and space that played an important role in the creation of the artworks. Summer Stage and New Releases series are painting-installation artworks which reflect the psychological and physical state artist Hyun-Jung Shin was in when she was confronted with scorching summer days in a new workroom last summer. Hye-Na Kim displays engraved artwork she worked on ever since 2013. Objects that are seen outside the workroom while taking a walk and stories that have been told and heard take the form of people, landscape and abstract images. Ji-Hee Kim displays an artwork of book drawings and pop-up books created with the donated books that were on the verge of being discarded by Goldsmiths University of London and adds new meanings to the books that have lost their value to be archived. All this speak well of the artists' attitude of putting more emphasis on the actual environment and relevant actions taken to create their artworks rather than on the concept or the theme that describes their artworks.
