연극 ‘한밤중에 개에게 일어난 의문의 사건’은 마크 해던(Mark Haddon)의 동명 베스트셀러를 원작으로 한다. 불가능을 가능으로 만드는 무대는 주인공 크리스토퍼의 머릿속에 있는 것 같은 느낌을 준다. 연극 ‘워 호스(War Horse)’의 연출인 마리안 엘리엇(Marianne Elliot)과 무대 디자이너 버니 크리스티(Bunny Christie)의 만남은 바닥, 벽, 찬장까지 정말 파격적이고도 순수한 연극에서만 느낄 수 있는 재미를 선사한다.

줄거리

마크 해던(Mark Haddon)의 동명 베스트셀러를 원작으로 크리스토퍼라는 자폐증을 앓고 있는 열다섯 살 소년에 대한 이야기이다. 크리스토퍼는 이웃집 개가 죽은 것을 발견하고 개를 죽인 범인을 추리해나간다. 그는 주변에 일어나는 모든 일을 수학적으로 받아들여 사람들의 오해를 살 만큼 천문학 그리고 수학에는 영재인 모습을 보인다. 은유와 농담 같은 보통 사람들에게 당연한 일을 이해하는 것이 그에게는 참으로 어려운 일이다. 연극은 크리스토퍼는 이를 추리하는 과정을 책으로 기록하는데, 그의 담임선생님이 그가 기록한 책을 읽는 콘셉트로 진행되는데, 이 과정에서 크리스토퍼는 엄마의 죽음과 관련한 사실을 알게 된다.

Curious Incident, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike during its sell-out run at the National's Cottesloe Theatre and set a new record with its NT Live broadcast to worldwide cinemas, being seen by over 40,000 people in the UK alone.

Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears' dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington.

He has an extraordinary brain, exceptional at maths while illequipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.
